Installation during 190th anniversary of the Battle at the Battle of Nations Monument in Leipzig

| During the battle
of the nations within 77 hours about 110,000 soldiers of all armies involved
fighting were killed or were wounded. This affected one in four soldiers
involved in the fighting. If you consider the sacrifices who were loosing
their lives not during the active battle, so the number of dead is around
126,000 people.
The "Lake of Tears" refers to its huge volume of water to the suffering of the victims and all those affected. I recorded the sound which occurs when a tear falls into this lake. From 16.10. 8 a. m. (the battle began 190 years ago) until 19.10., 1 p.m., (the date of termination of the battle) I let 126 000 tears fall acoustic into the water. About every 2 seconds you can hear a tear falling as a symbol of one victim in he Battle of Nations. Within a period of 77 hours 126 000 tears remember all the victims. Parallel to the acoustic installation at the entrance to the monument in the direct line of sight, the number 126 000 is to read as written white numbers on the floor. The visitors are walking over the number and spread with their steps the chalk around the lake. At the end the chalk become a white layer around the lake and the number is no longer visible. |
